Treating certain fungal infections of the fingernails or toenails. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Terbinafine is an antifungal agent. It works by killing sensitive fungi.

Tablets by mouth are often prescribed for the treatment of onychomycosis, a fungal nail infection, typically by a dermatophyte or Candida species. Fungal nail infections are located deep under the nail in the cuticle to which topically applied treatments are unable to penetrate in sufficient amounts. The tablets may, rarely, cause hepatotoxicity, so patients are warned of this and may be monitored with liver function tests. Alternatives to by mouth administration have been studied.

Tablets: 250 mg orally once a day

Duration of therapy:
-Fingernail onychomycosis: 6 weeks
-Toenail onychomycosis: 12 weeks

Comments:
-Before using this drug, patients should be evaluated for evidence of chronic or active liver disease.
-Before starting therapy, appropriate nail specimens for laboratory testing (potassium hydroxide preparation, fungal culture, or nail biopsy) should be obtained to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis.
-Optimal clinical effect observed some months after mycological cure and completion of therapy; related to time required for outgrowth of healthy nail.

Use: For the treatment of onychomycosis of the fingernail or toenail due to dermatophytes (tinea unguium)

Commonly reported side effects of terbinafine include: headache. Other side effects include: diarrhea, dyspepsia, and skin rash.
